COVID-19 RESPONSE: Kano Non-Partisan Elders Meet Gov. Ganduje, Promise Committed Intervention

Spirited with the love for their state, amid COVID-19 challenges, non-partisan Kano elders, who are mostly professionals serving and retired, technocrats, businessmen, among others, met with the governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje via teleconference and assured their support unrelentedly.

Under the Chairmanship of AB Mahmoud, SAN, elders’ concern, as disclosed by the governor, was how to improve community engagement in the fight against the disease in the state.

The disclosure was made by the governor during the State Task Force media briefing, which took place at Africa House, Government House, Kano, adding that, “…other area of concern and interest by the non-partisan Kano elders, was how to use technology in order to improve capacity and capability, among others.”

He reveals that, they also have special concern on the issue of Almajiri and that of COVID-19 Palliative system. “We decided to work out modalities and plan, as a good Plan of Action, so that we can avoid duplication of responsibilities with other arrangements. Very soon we will come with a Technical group for the engagement to take proper shape,” he said.

Governor Ganduje further explained that “We are doing all that we can to have more collection centres in our 36 distant local governments in the state. We have reached an advanced stage at that. This will go a long way in detecting community transmission with the view to crushing the pandemic.”

On lockdown he said, his administration was still aware and conversant with the 3 Ls, that of Life, Livelihood and Liberty issues, surrounding lockdown process, both locally and globally, “…particularly in our local setting,” he postulates.

“It is either you take your life and that of your family and other members of the society very serious and stay home and observe other protocols, to stay safe.

Or you assume that livelihood matter supersedes your life or you think you have liberty or you are at liberty to move around as you wish, while disregarding your life. We are really conscious of this sequence,” he theorises.

While agreeing that, it was not out of order to tinker lockdown with human face, he believes that the issue of total lockdown was still controversial around the globe.

“If people observe the protocols, then the relaxation of lockdown is in sight. Considering that, the lockdown cannot be forever. What we need to do is to examine and produce more proactive measures,” governor Ganduje hints.
