A good day for Oyo State sports as the state Governor Engineer Seyi Makinde splashed cash on the state contingents to the 19th National Sports Festival tagged Abuja 2018.
In the naira rains that fell at the Lekan Salami stadium on Thursday 4th June 2020, 130 athletes and 102 officials received monetary rewards from the State Commissioner for Youths and Sports Honourable Seun Fakorede.
22 athletes who won gold medals for the state at the last sports festival got #350,000 each, 64 silver medalists got #200,000 each while 54 bronze medalists went home with #150,000 each.
Apart from the athletes, each of the 15 coaches whose athletes won gold medals received #200,000, 17 silver medal winning coaches got #150,000 each with 19 coaches of bronze winners taking home #100,000 each.
In his speech at the event, Mr Seun Fakorede thanked Governor Makinde for making monetary rewards possible. Mr Fakorede promised that the monetary reward was just a tip of the iceberg.
The visibly delighted rewarded medalists were full of thanks for Governor Makinde and the state Commissioner for Youths and Sports for putting smiles on their faces during the Covid 19 lock down.
Team Oyo took the eighth position at the last National Sports Festival held in Abuja in 2018 with a collection of 95 medals comprising 16 gold, 36 silver and 45 bronze medals.
